Profile photo of Ian Jones Before setting up Croft Consulting Services in October 2003, Ian Jones spent 17 years as a Director of NERA Economic Consulting, where he headed the European Transport Group. He was a panel member of the UK Competition Commission and subsequently the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) from 2005 until April 2014, and was until recently a Lay Member of the NHS South West Regional Panel for Cooperation and Competition.

At NERA, Ian directed a series of major projects for the UK government, the European Commission, and international development agencies, as well as for private sector clients, on issues covering industry restructuring, privatisation, economic regulation, and competition policy.

Prior to joining NERA, Ian was a senior researcher at the National Institute of Economic and Social Research (NIESR), where he worked on the economics of training. He has also worked as a member of the UK Government Economic Service, first at the Department of Transport and later at the Monopolies and Mergers Commission (a predecessor body to the Competition and Markets Authority).

Ian has held several academic posts, including those of Visiting Senior Research Fellow at the London Business School, and Lecturer in Economics at the University of Leeds. He is the author of a book (published by Macmillan) on transport planning and evaluation, and has published extensively in academic journals on transport economics, on the economics of training, and on project evaluation and pricing in the electricity supply industry.

Ian delivered one of the Beesley lectures (on railway franchising in the UK) in 1999, and has acted as a discussant at the lectures on several other occasions.

He has a degree in economics from Cambridge University.
